Ristar

Megadrive/Genesis

[Available via Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console]

Summary:

Ristar is a lesser known platformer of the time, revolving round a simple storyline of Ristar having to save the galaxy from an evil space pirate who has taken control of the leaders of each planet in that galaxy... in order to save them Ristar (a small star-shaped character) has to travel from planet to planet using an alternative approach of defeating his enemies of basically grabbing them and slamming himself into them, using this technique to also navigate through the levels which vary in theme greatly from ice planets, lava planets, high-tech planets to even musical planets!

[A refreshingly different style of platforming for the time, this was a great alternative to the Sonic series, although its popularity was limited by it being released late on in the Megadrive's/Genesis' lifespan as well as, well, not being Sonic!]

Pros:

- Beautiful graphics and melodies which suit the levels perfectly

- A large variety of worlds, bosses and secrets to discover throughout, plenty to keep you interested

- Smart and intuitive controls

Cons:

- Boss battles can be very frustrating at times

- Can get fairly challenging later on with what are a limited amount of continues and lives

Similar Retro Games:

- Dynamite Heady [Megadrive/Genesis]

- Sonic The Hedgehog Series [Megadrive/Genesis]

Retro Score: 4/5
