Ghouls Ďn Ghosts

Megadrive / Genesis

[Available via Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console]

Summary:

Arthur must once again save the princess from the dark prince Lucifer and his evil minions, who have kidnapped her once again to perform a dark and evil ritual to bring back an evil far greater than even Lucifer himself! In this side-scrolling platform action game you must fight your way through hordes of evil forces and navigate treacherous levels full of pitfalls and death, with only a few weapons at hand to help you through it all! While they can be upgraded (along with your armour) keeping them that way will be the hardest part, as the moment you get hurt youíll have to power them all up over again with the added embarrassment of being stripped of your armour (and left standing in just your underwear)! Rated as one of the hardest games ever made by some gamers, are you up to the challenge?

Pros:

- Atmospheric soundtrack and effects really add to the feel of the game

- The general controls are responsive and easy to pick up

- The level designs are diverse and challenging throughout with creative enemies and boss battles

Cons:

- The difficulty level is very high; unless youíre really patient youíll struggle to get far in this game!

- Having to play through the whole game twice (or more if you fail to pick up the right power up the second time around) makes the whole experience tiresome

- Some of the weapons are weak and/or hard to use, plus once you pick them up finding another one to replace it with can take a while too...

Metroid

NES

[Available via Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console]

Summary:

Samus Aranís first adventure against the menace of the Space Pirates and their evil leader the Mother Brain takes her into the depths of the planet Zebes to discover their secret hideout and stop their plans to exploit the powers of the Metroids! Fighting her way past a variety of local inhabitants, space pirates and even the infamous Metroids themselves, Samus has an array of weaponry and items she can use, such as a Morph Ball to navigate even the tightest of areas, Missiles, Ice Beams, more powerful armour as well as a Screw Attack which allows her to defy gravity with every jump! Although youíll first have to find each weapon and power up as you make your way through the game, often then needing the new skills youíve learned in order to get further in the game and to reach previously unreachable areas and secrets!

Pros:

- A multitude of power ups and skills to be discovered as you progress make this an enjoyable and rewarding experience, especially once you start picking up the real heavy hitting weaponry and advanced techniques!

- For a NES game thereís a lot to explore and plenty of secrets to be discovered

- Overall a very complete game, smooth controls, a decent soundtrack, varied enemy design, etc.

Cons:

- Itís very easy to get lost; with no map and a lot of areas looking identical, you may struggle to find your way to new areas, as well as to keep track of areas you need to go back to in order to find hidden secrets later on!

- Building up your health when you start a new game or continue can be tedious and time consuming (unless of course you pick up an energy tank, but the amount of times you can do that is limited)

- All the platform jumping early on can get tedious; while the space jump makes this less of an issue later on itíll take you a while before you are able to do that...

Retro Score: 4/5

Altered Beast

Megadrive/Genesis

[Available via Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console]

Summary:

In this Arcade coin-op conversion you have been resurrected in order to save Zeusí daughter who has been kidnapped by the evil god Neff! Using a variety of shape-shifting abilities you must fight your way through five levels of un-dead zombies and evil demons, with a second player also able to join in to help you along the way!

Pros:

- Pure arcade action, which in 2-player can be good fun

- The beast form power-ups make fighting your way through the levels much more enjoyable

Cons

- Very short game; even though the difficulty is fairly high and you donít have many lives to work with to compensate for this youíll find yourself getting bored of this fairly quickly

- Getting enough power-ups to turn into the beast form in each level takes a while; even when you are able to use your beast form the levels are still fairly slow-paced

- The soundtrack and effects are fairly dull and uninspiring

- Final Fight [SNES]

- Double Dragon [NES]

Retro Score: 2/5
